Business Description

School address : Askam Village School, Lots Road Askam-in-Furness, Cumbria. LA16 7DA. Askam Village School, Askam in Furness Askam Village School is a Primary School offering a broad and balanced education for boys and girls aged 4 -11 who live in Askam/Ireleth and surrounding areas. The school re-opened as a remodelled Primary School in the early 1970's. In April 1994 the school achieved Grant Maintained status and so became self-governing, receiving funding directly from the Department for Education. Since going Grant Maintained, the school was delightfully converted into a modern, classroom style school to create a highly efficient and quiet working environment. Following the abolition of Grant Maintained Status in 2001, the school became a Foundation School. In 1999 a major new building project added a new junior classroom, junior entrance and toilet block, added a new infant classroom, toilets, new infant foyer and a remodelled the east wing. Recent building work has added two new special needs withdrawal/meeting rooms and remodelling has created a separate library and music room. The computer suite area has also been remodelled and redesigned. In 2000, further building work was financed and approved by the Funding Agency for Schools due to overcrowding caused by the popularity of the school. We finally regained approval for a new classroom, office foyer, cloakroom, PE storage rooms and Year 6 classroom remodelling. All this work was completed in August 2007. By this time birth rate and admissions had fallen both locally and nationally. The new building leaves the school with more than enough space for all classes, lessons and projects. The school now enjoys uniquely spacious and varied grounds with an open aspect and marvellous views to the Lakeland hills and the Duddon Estuary. Although in an urban area, the school is set in sizeable grounds in which there are three play areas, a large sports field with two football pitches, a five a side pitch, two kwik-cricket all weather surfaces, a mixed centenary environmental woodland, an environmental area which has been allowed to develop naturally, a seated garden area, large chess court and two attractive courtyard garden areas. The play areas to the rear and sides of the school have been security fenced to provide a high level of safety and security for all pupils whilst using the extensive zoned playground areas including adventure play area, climbing walls, sheltered canopy area and an amphitheatre. The playground is fully fenced and has a safety rubber surface to reduce injury when playing.
