Our History
Rileys is one of the best-known names in British Sports and is synonymous around the globe with the games of pool and snooker.
Our proud heritage dates back to 1878 when the Manchester based entrepreneur Edward John Riley walked out of his job in a local bank and turned his passion for cricket, tennis and billiards into his lifetime’s work. EJ Riley began by opening his first sports emporium in the growing city, which had given life to the Industrial Revolution. Shortly after he made way for his fledgling manufacturing business by developing new types of cricket bats, sports toys and goods for the citizens of Manchester and beyond.
By 1896 Riley had turned the business into a limited company and begun the production of billiards tables. Within two years he had appointed his first managing Director, Mr J T Kenyon and the pair moved the business to a specially constructed factory. At the start of the 20th Century they took their business to London where they soon received their big break as the competitors for the Professional Billiards Championships chose a Riley table to settle the finals. Shortly after they moved into the Billiard Hall business where they grew in strength as the choice of champions.
Rileys Sports Bars are now run as a completely separate business from that of table making, with more than 60 sports bars across the UK, employing some 600 people.
Rileys has over half a million members and a customer base of around 3 million people a year. The clubs have successfully established a haven for the community offering a social sanctuary where individuals can relax and take pleasure from the challenge and achievement of chalking up a win in a competitive sport. We have helped to transform lives by nurturing local talent and will continue to do so in years to come.
Rileys Sports Bars offer a place to eat, drink, play & watch sports and spend time with friends.
